Helping Our Community Make Informed Decisions

Voices of Experience

"I’ve spoken with leaders both in Jordan and Canyons. A Jordan board member said that now that they’ve grown to nearly 60K students, they are just getting back to offering students the number of choices and programs that they could offer before the split 15 years ago. A Canyons board member said that what voters didn’t anticipate, is that because they had a higher tax base, when disagreements arose, the court ordered them to pay over 60% of the costs and just last year finished making payments to the remaining part of Jordan district that didn’t get a say in Canyons breaking off 15 years ago... We hear about the positives (which we should, as some are great) of Canyons a lot in arguments for a 3-way split and likely on the ballot info. The more unsavory parts are often not included but should be equally weighed by voters."

Utah State Board of Education member

"I spent 19 years on the ASD school board and have seen firsthand the complexities and nuances of running a school district. The recommendations on any split should have come from the school board and not from city councils. City councils are not elected to represent schools. That is the role of the school board."

Guy Fugal

Pleasant Grove, mayor

"Our vulnerable student population needs to be on the forefront of this decision, not potential collateral damage. Resources are already stretched thin, and yet our special education students, limited English proficient students, and marginalized students have more support in Alpine School District than in many smaller districts."

Kate Ross

ASD administrator

"ANY district split will COST MORE money for each of the new districts.  There is no way to get around that.  So, advertising it as a “tax savings” on their signs is 100% misleading.  It will cost taxpayers more, not less, yet they are misleading tax payers to believe it will be a savings."

Joe Jensen

ASD administrator

"Beyond the financial implications, it seems like there are some important educational aspects to consider relative to the impact on students.  In my experience, the collective good has been well served since the beginning of Alpine School District."

Gary Seastrand

BYU School of Education, ASD Administrator, retired

"I feel it would be a great disservice to split Alpine School District. Our

district is a model of districts across the nation. Splitting the district would require duplicate administrations, new offices, separate transportation departments, and the list would go on and on. Everything added on the list would require millions of dollars from tax payers."
